A 22-year-old civil services aspirant had in, January 2014, alleged that Mohanty raped her on several occasions on pretext of helping her get through IAS exams
Over three years after he went ‘missing’ retired IAS officer BB Mohanty surrendered before the Jaipur police, on Monday night, in connection with a rape case filed against him by a 22-year-old civil services aspirant in January 2014.
Mohanty has been placed under arrest and the police will seek his custody from the court to interrogate him in connection with the rape case.
A 1977-batch IAS officer of the Rajasthan cadre, Mohanty had gone into hiding soon after the rape complaint was filed against him on January 25, 2014. When the complaint was filed Mohanty was an additional chief secretary rank officer and was serving as chairman of the Rajasthan Civil Services Appellate Tribunal.
Mohanty had been suspended by the Rajasthan government soon after the complaint was made public and had retired from service while being on the run from the police.
The case against Mohanty pertains to a complaint filed by an MBA student who had alleged that while she was preparing for the civil services entrance in February 2013, the tainted IAS officer had raped her on several occasions on the pretext of helping her in clearing the examinations.
“Mohanty surrendered… and was placed under arrest on Monday night. He will be produced in a local court on Tuesday”, deputy commissioner of Jaipur Police (South) Yogesh Dadhich was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.
When the case had come to light, Mohanty had vehemently denied the allegations made by the civil services aspirant. “This is all nonsense… the allegations against me are baseless,” Mohanty had told the media then. His wife too had come out in his support. However, the IAS officer had then gone ‘missing’, having managed to evade arrest for three years.
In her private complaint made at the Mahesh Nagar police station in Jaipur, the rape survivor had alleged that BB Mohanty had called her to a place in Swej farm and raped her repeatedly on February 17 and 19 in 2013.
The 22-year-old woman had added that Mohanty had introduced himself to her as a senior IAS officer and claimed that he would help her in clearing the civil services examinations.
