The Mumbai Police traced and returned the handbag of a woman containing over 2 lakh cash. The lady forgot her bag in an auto rickshaw in suburban Santacruz, an official said on Wednesday, September 11.

The woman forgot the bag on Saturday, September 7. The Vakola police traced the driver of the auto rickshaw with the help of CCTV footage and returned it to her within 24 hours.

“The woman, Laxmi Govda, had gone to Bengaluru with her son last week. After returning to Mumbai by a bus on Saturday, they took an auto rickshaw to go home at Prabhat Colony in Santacruz. Upon reaching their place, her son took down all the bags from the rickshaw, but forgot her handbag, containing over Rs 2 lakh, inside the vehicle,” police said.

After the incident took place the woman approached the police and registered a complaint.

“After receiving the complaint, a police team went through the footage of the dozens of CCTV cameras installed in the area and zeroed in on a rickshaw,” senior inspector Kailash Awhad said. “Later, we collected information about the rickshaw owner from the RTO. He was identified as Gajdhar Bandh, a resident of Santacruz. Within 24 hours, we brought the driver to the police station and recovered over Rs two lakh cash from him and handed it over to the complainant,” Awhad added.

The driver was detained and later released.

This is not the first time when Mumbai police proved its worth. In the month of August, an employee of a diamond trading company left his bag in an auto containing ornaments worth Rs 7.5 lakh. The police managed to return it back to the man within 3 hours of the loss.
