Dawood Ibrahim’s properties were seized under the provisions of SAFEMA after the underworld don fled India in mid 1990s.
Three properties belonging to the fugitive gangster Dawood Ibrahim were sold to the Saifee Burhani Upliftment Trust (SBUT) at an auction in Mumbai on Tuesday.
An official of the Smuggling and Foreign Exchange Manipulators (Forfeiture of Property) Act (SAFEMA) confirmed that the SBUT made the highest bid for the three sealed properties of the crime lord and bought them at the cost of over Rs 11 crore during the auction at the Indian Merchant Chamber office.
According to officials, among the three properties of Dawood – which were put on auction on Tuesday –the Rounaq restaurant, also known as Delhi Zaika, was sold for Rs 4.53 crore. Another property in Dhamarwala was sold for Rs 3.53 crore and the third one – Shabnam Guest House – was auctioned at Rs 3.52 crore.
A spokesperson of SBUT said, “Saifee Burhani Upliftment Trust has won the auction for three properties of Dawood Ibrahim. The trust won the auction for Shabnam Guest House, six flats in Damarwala building and a restaurant Rounaq Afroz.”
“The three properties fall under our ongoing Bhendi Bazaar redevelopment project. These buildings are in dilapidated condition and unfit for living. Therefore to ensure safety of the families living in these buildings and to carry on with redevelopment project, we participated in the bidding and acquired these properties,” the spokesperson added.
Dawood Ibrahim’s properties were seized under the provisions of SAFEMA after the underworld don fled India in mid 1990s. Though the authorities had earlier planned to auction the properties of Dawood in a phased manner, the earlier auctions couldn’t clinch much attention of the bidders – apparently due to fear factor.
Earlier in 2015, Hindu leader Swami Chakrapani bought Dawood’s green Hyundai Accent car at an auction for Rs 32,000. Chakrapani had also expressed his eagerness to acquire the Rounaq Afroz – to build a public toilet in the area under the Prime Minister’s Swachh Bharat Mission.
“After acquiring Hotel Afroz in the bidding, I will build a plush toilet there for public use. This toilet will be elegant and open to all free of cost. By turning the gangster’s property into a toilet, I want to send the message: see how terrorism ends!” he said earlier.
