Shaktikanta Das, a member of the Fifteenth Finance Commission and man behind the note ban and GST was appointed the new governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Tuesday (December 11), news agency Reuters reported.
The appointment of Das as RBI governor comes after Urjit Patel announced his surprise exit on Monday. His appointment comes three days ahead of a crucial meeting of the RBI Board on Friday.
A 1980 batch IAS officer from Tamil Nadu Cadre, Shaktikanta was appointed the governor for a period of three years. He retired as the Economic Affairs secretary in May 2017
Das is known for being an experienced bureaucrat who has held key positions both under the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and also under the previous Indian National Congress-led government, reported Reuters.
As the economic affairs secretary, Das was the key man behind the planning and execution of demonetisation drive. Most of the public statements on demonetisation had been made by him who led to the impression that the government was at the forefront of the drive instead of the RBI.
In October 2015, Das was nominated to the Central Board of Directors of the RBI.
Das was also behind the Tamil Nadu’s successful SEZs and industrial policy. He withstood political pressure to allot government land to private IT companies in Tamil Nadu without a bidding process.
