Two-time Bhartiya Janata Party president and NDA’s vice presidential candidate M Venkaiah Naidu filed his nomination in the Parliament on Tuesday. Naidu was accompanied by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Finance and Defence Minister Arun Jaitley and External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj.
Thanking PM Modi and BJP President Amit Shah, Naidu said that he will uphold the dignity of the office of Vice President of India if elected. “Office of Vice President is a different profile, it has its functional norms. I hope I will be able to do justice. I am grateful to the Prime Minister,” he told reporters.
Earlier in the day, Naidu resigned from his ministerial responsibilities and from the BJP. President Pranab Mukherjee has accepted his resignation.
He had held the information and broadcasting (I&B) and urban development portfolios.
Union Textile Minister Smriti Irani has been given the additional charge of I&B Ministry while Rural Development Minister Narendra Singh Tomar received the additional charge of Urban Development Ministry.
After parting ways from the BJP, an emotional Naidu said that after losing his mother at a young age, he treated the party as his mother and it brought him up to this level.
Naidu said he had planned to withdraw from active politics after 2019 but destiny had stored something else for him.”I have treated the BJP as my mother, so it was very painful to leave my party. “I had told my colleagues that I want to see Prime Minister Narendra Modi come back again in 2019 and then I will call it off and join social service. But destiny decided otherwise. Finally after discussion, I have agreed. I have withdrawn myself from party, do not belong to BJP now,” Naidu said.
The Vice-Presidential election will be held on August 5 and Naidu will contest against the opposition’s candidate Gopalkrishna Gandhi.
