The Congress Working Committee (CWC), the party’s top decision-making body, is meeting today (Saturday, Aug 10) to select a new party chief.

Congress chief ministers, state presidents and party office bearers would also be consulted before a new president was chosen, in accordance with former party chief Rahul Gandhi’s suggestion.

A final decision, said media reports, is likely by 9 this evening after consultation with state leaders and the leaders representing five zonal units.

Rahul Gandhi his mother Sonia Gandhi excused themselves from the day’s session, saying they cannot be part of the selection process as they have served as heads of the party previously.

Rahul Gandhi had quit on May 25, after the party’s disastrous performance in the Lok Sabha election. The party has been without a chief since then.

The demoralisation and confusion that followed the poll debacle and the party chief’s resignation left many party leaders at different levels perplexed. While this was most evident in Karnataka and Goa, where party’s elected MLAs quit or switched sides, the latest instances came from Rajya Sabha and Jharkhand.

Kalita joins BJP: The chief whip of Congress in the Rajya Sabha until last week, Bhubaneshwar Kalita, on Friday joined the BJP. Kalita resigned on August 5 as he decided against issuing a whip against the Centre’s J&K move, saying the national sentiment was otherwise

Jharkhand Congress president quits: In Jharkhand, state Congress president Ajoy Kumar on Friday resigned from the post alleging corruption in the state unit. He said “worst criminals look better than some colleagues” and alleged some party leaders’ only intention is to grab power and sell tickets.
