Goa CM and former defense minister Manohar Parrikar, who was ailing from pancreatic cancer for over a year, breathed his last at the age of 63 on Sunday (March 17).

President Ram Nath Kovind confirmed the news about his death through a condolence message

“Extremely sorry to hear of the passing of Shri Manohar Parrikar, Chief Minister of Goa, after an illness borne with fortitude and dignity. An epitome of integrity and dedication in public life, his service to the people of Goa and of India will not be forgotten,” President Kovind tweeted.

Apart from Kovind, PM Modi among other senior leaders also mourned the demise of Parrikar

Congress president Rahul Gandhi also took to Twitter to offer his condolences and called Manohar Parrikar as “one of Goa’s favourite sons”.

“I am deeply saddened by the news of the passing of Goa CM, Shri Manohar Parrikar Ji, who bravely battled a debilitating illness for over a year. Respected and admired across party lines, he was one of Goa’s favourite sons. My condolences to his family in this time of grief,” Rahul Gandhi tweeted.

BJP chief Amit Shah too mourned the demise of Parrikar

Union minister VK Singh said Goa and India have lost a stalwart today. “Sad demise of @manoharparrikar ji leaves a void in our lives. He was a leader who came up with pragmatic solutions to the most complex problems-Goa & India has lost a stalwart today. The nation & I mourn your loss, & will miss you. Rest in Peace my dear friend,” VK Singh tweeted.

His body will be kept at the Goa BJP office and at the Kala Academy for people to pay their last respects to the leader. He will be cremated this evening.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Rajnath Singh will go to Goa to pay their respects to Parrikar. Chief Ministers of various BJP-ruled states are also expected to reach the state. A meeting of the Union Cabinet has been called to pay condolence to Parrikar.

The central government has announced a day’s national mourning today, during which all schools and colleges in Goa would remain closed.
