Panelists say that leaders should refrain from making irresponsible remarks

Former J&K chief minister and National Conference (NC) leader Omar Abdullah has rebuked J&K Governor Satya Pal Malik for telling militants that they should kill corrupt politicians. Malik’s statement has stirred up a political storm. APN’s popular debate Mudda discussed the issue. Anchorperson Akshay posed the questions to panellists including the BJP’s Dinesh Singh, political expert Fazil Ahmed, social worker Indumeet Singh, PDP’s Dr Harbax Singh Shanty, and noted scribe Ajay Rana.

Dinesh Singh said: “The Governor has expressed regret. There are times, when a person does not think clearly, especially when times are so bad, as they are in the Valley. This is what must have happened with Malik. Nobody agrees with his views, but it has to be seen in the context. We often say things that we know we should not be saying. But of course, as Governor, he should not have made such a comment.”

Rana said: “This is reminding me of Hitler times. Is this the Taliban regime? There is corruption in all regions, should w go about killing leaders because of that? This is a highly controversial, unacceptable remark.”

Harbax Singh said: “These kind of statements give rise to crime, and militancy. There should be an FIR against Malik. The Government of India should take serious action against such remarks. Whether Governor, or the common man, why should anyone talk like that? Did he forget that he was the Governor? No responsible citizen of the country should be talking like that.”

Dinesh Singh said: “I feel if he has apologised, the matter should end there. Malik has expressed regret. If we go on attacking people like that, just because they have made inappropriate statements, there would be no end. Where will we stop then? I am not saying that Malik was right, but we should move on. Balasaheb Thackeray had said that he would kill anyone who spreads militancy. So you see, we often make general remarks like that out of frustration.”

Rana said: “BJP is just making inroads in the Valley. I agree that the most corrupt are the political leaders. Even small-time leaders move about in expensive cars. Do we find out the source of their lavish lifestyles?”

Singh said: “BJP leaders, have time and again, made transparent their incomes and their assets. It is easy to point fingers at people. Don’t forget leaders include even those like the PM, and Yogiji—and nobody can raise a finger at them regarding corruption.”

Rana said: “It is not just politicians, media too has corrupt people. When a leader is elected, his income graph rises rapidly.”

Ahmed said: “It is Malik’s inner distress which made him made the controversial remark.”

Dinesh Singh said: “Modiji’s modest lifestyle is known to all.”

Harbax Singh said: “This remarks shows the helplessness of the leaders. There is law to deal with militancy.”

Indumeet Singh said: “As a governor, Malik should have taken action against the corrupt. What is needed is action against the corrupt, not a suggestion to go about killing then.”

Dinesh Singh said: “Even as we talk, there is news that a jawan has been killed in the Valley. Such incidents are disturbing.”

Harbax Singh said:  “Government should be thinking of compensation to victims, disabled pensions for jawans and so on.”

Dinesh Singh said: “Malik must be thinking of corrupt leaders and bureaurcrats…it must have been a general remark.”
