Pusarla Venkata Sindhu made it to the top and became the first Indian to win the Badminton World Championship 2019 by defeating her rival Nozomi Okuhara of Japan on Sunday, August 25.
The Olympic silver-medallist PV Sindhu was in total control as she won 21-7, 21-7 in a match that lasted just 38 minutes. “Last time, I lost in the final, before that also I lost in the final, so it is a very important win for me. I want to thank the crowd for supporting me. I won it for my country and I am very proud being an Indian, “Sindhu said after the match. She dedicated the award to her mother who had her birthday on the day of the final. While addressing her coach she said, “A big thanks to my coach Kim and Gopi sir and my supporting staff.”
Her previous records show that with every passing year the only thing that is constant is improvement : 2013 – Bronze, 2014 – Bronze, 2017 – Silver, 2018 – Silver, 2019 – Gold. Sindhu fought against Tai Tzu Ying in the quarter-finals. At first, Ying made it difficult for her but then Sindhu fought back to win the match in three games. After the quarter-finals there was no stopping Sindhu. In the Semi-final she was up against Chan Yufei and in the final it was Nozomi Okuhara. She defeated both of them to become the World Champion 2019. She is now the second woman shuttler to have five medals and the third to have bagged medals in all three colours.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi took twitter to congratulate the player. He tweeted, “The stupendously talented @Pvsindhu1 makes India proud again! Congratulations to her for winning the Gold at the BWF World Championships. The passion and dedication with which she’s pursued badminton is inspiring. PV Sindhu’s success will inspire generations of players.”
The country believes that this is just the beginning for Sindhu. The Tokyo Olympics is the next .
