Selectors have made six changes to the squad that played the Champions Trophy in June
Indian Cricket Board (BCCI) on Sunday announced the team for the five match ODI series and the one-off T20I against Sri-Lanka. As many as six changes have been made to the squad which played the Champions Trophy in June.
Talented Karnataka batsman Manish Pandey and his Ranji teammate KL Rahul made a comeback to the team.
On expected lines, senior batsman Yuvraj Singh and spinners R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja were not included in the squad. Apparently, Ashwin and Jadeja have been rested after a long test series while Yuvraj has been dropped for his inconsistent performance.
This is not the first time Yuvraj Singh has been dropped, but now with age not in his side, it is being believed that the curtains have finally been drawn on his remarkable limited-overs career.
Other players to not feature in the team are Mohammed Shami, Umesh Yadav and Dinesh Karthik.
In the absence of senior pace duo Shami and Yadav, the pace department will be led by Bhubneshwar Kumar along with JaspritBumrah. Mumbai pacer Shardul Thakur has been drafted as the third seamer.
The spin department has taken a completely different form with the absence of Ashwin and Jadeja. The spin bowling duties will now be shared by Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel and Yuzvendra Chahal.
The team, which seems to be selected keeping the 2019 World Cup in mind, does not includes a back-up wicketkeeper as Rahul and Kedar Jadhav have shown that they are capable of keeping the wicket.
Hardik Pandya has retained the all-rounder’s spot in the team.
The five-match ODI series will begin on Sunday at Dambulla. India’s tour of Sri Lanka will conclude with second Twenty20 in Colombo on September 6.
