The sanctions seek to disrupt the financial support Pakistan-based terrorists get.

In an attempt to disrupt the leadership and funding activities of Lashkar-e-Tayyeba (LeT), the United States on Thursday imposed sanctions on the group as well as the Hafiz Saeed-led Jamaat-ud-Dawah (JuD).

Hafiz Saeed is the mastermind of the  2008 Mumbai attacks.

According to the report, Ayatullah Ghulam Muhammad (Haji Hayatullah), Ali Muhammad Abu Turab, Inayat-ur Rahman, and a purported charity managed by Inayat-ur Rahman, the Welfare and Development Organisation of Quran and Sunnah (WDO) are expected to be affected by the sanctions.

John E Smith, the Director of the US Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), said, “These sanctions seek to disrupt the financial support networks of terrorists based in Pakistan who have provided support to the Taliban, Al Qaeda, Islamic State and LeT for recruitment and funding of suicide bombers and other violent insurgent operations”.

Smith said the individuals and entity on whom sanctions have been imposed posed a threat to security of both US and Pakistan. “The individuals are opportunistic and willing to work with extremist organisations’, even those ideologically opposed to one another, to help them deepen their foothold in the region,” said Smith.
