In a tragic incident, fifteen migrant labourers sleeping near the road in Gujarat’s Surat were crushed to death by a truck on Tuesday morning. The incident took place near Kosamba village, around 60 Km from Surat, police said. The labourers were sleeping when a dumper truck ran over them on the Kim-Mandvi road. Reports said, 12 labourers died on the spot and three of the eight injured died in a nearby hospital. All the deceased labourers hailed from Banswada in Rajasthan.
The truck first collided with a sugarcane laden tractor coming from the opposite direction after which the driver lost control of the vehicle, thus running over the migrant labourers sleeping on the pavement. The driver has been arrested.
The truck’s front window pane shattered after colliding with the tractor that blocked the driver’s vision. The truck then veered off the road and ran over the sleeping labourers, Surat SP Usha Rada told news agency PTI.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his grief over the incident on twitter. He said the loss of lives due to a truck accident in Surat is tragic. He offered his condolences to bereaved families. Praying that the injured recover at the earliest, PM Modi added.
He also announced an ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh each from PMNRF to the families of victims who have lost their lives due to the accident in Surat. Rs. 50,000 each would be given to those injured, he added.
