35 were killed and 48 were injured in a massive stampede that erupted at Iranian general Qassem Soleimani’s funeral procession.
According to Iranian state TV’s report, the stampede took place at Qassem Soleimani’s homewtown, Kerman, as the procession was underway. Initial videos posted online showed people lying lifeless on a road, others shouting and trying to give help them.
Pirhossein Koulivand, the head of Iran’s emergency medical services confirmed the unfortunate incident. “Unfortunately as a result of the stampede, some of our compatriots have been injured and some have been killed during the funeral processions,” he said
Last week United States launched a military strike on Baghdad airport, killing Qassem Soleimani.
As the commander of the Quds Force, Soleimani was considered to be one of the powerful figures in Iran, having played a prominent role in Iran’s foreign policy in the Middle East over the last decade.
The assassination of Soleimani has led to widespread tension between Iran and the United States.
