Citizenship Amendment Bill in Rajya Sabha today

The Citizenship Amendment Bill, which was cleared by the Lok Sabha on Monday after about 12 hours of intense discussions, will be tabled in Rajya Sabha this afternoon. In the midnight vote, 311 members voted in favour of the contentious Bill and only 80 against it.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has dismissed the opposition’s charge that it violates the Constitution’s core principles of equality. It isn’t even “0.001% against India’s minorities”, the Home minister said in the Lok Sabha.

Meanwhile, protests intensified in Northeast against the Bill. People in the Northeast are worried that the Bill will endanger their identity and livelihood.
