5.2 magnitude earthquake hits Assam, tremors felt in Meghalaya, North Bengal

According to the report of the National Center for Seismology, Goalpara in Lower Assam was the epicenter of the earthquake at a depth of 14 km.

An earthquake of magnitude 5.2 hit Assam on Wednesday, around 8:45 am with tremors being felt in parts of North Bengal including Cooch Behar and Darjeeling, and neighboring Meghalaya besides Bangladesh.

According to the report of the National Center for Seismology, Goalpara in Lower Assam was the epicenter of the earthquake at a depth of 14 km.

“Earthquake of Magnitude:5.2, Occurred on 07-07-2021, 08:45:25 IST, Lat: 26.15 & Long: 90.28, Depth: 14 Km, Location: 71km N of Tura, Meghalaya, India,” the National Center for Seismology tweeted.

Deputy Director of Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Sanjay O’neil Shaw said the place of occurrence of the quake was 71 km north of Tura in Meghalaya, and the tremors were felt there too.

People in the districts of Lower Assam, including Guwahati, and Meghalaya ran out of their homes in panic. However, the tremors were also felt in the northern districts of West Bengal, including Alipurduar and Jalpaiguri.

The local media in Bangladesh reported that parts of the country, including Gaibandha, Dhaka, Bogura, and Rajshahi, also felt the jolt.

The officials said damage to property or life has not been reported so far.

Northeastern India falls in the high seismic zone, making the region an earthquake-prone area. The region is frequently hit by earthquakes.

A 6.4 magnitude quake had shaken the region on April 28.

In other India news, Dilip Kumar had been in and out of hospitals in the last one month and the family was hoping he would get better.
