Six people were killed and many got injured when a private tourist bus headed to Surat fell into a ditch on Sunday. According to police, among the injured, 15 are in critical condition.

The private bus had started from Nashik in north Maharashtra and was headed towards Palghar.

The incident occurred at around 2:45 pm in Torangane ghat between Mokhada and Trimbakeshwar villages, said Thane Region Disaster Management Cell (RDMC) chief Santosh Kadam.

The deceased had not been identified till the report was being filed. Police said they rescued more than 50 passengers from the bus, adding that among them, four were declared dead at the Mokhada civil hospital.

“Their belongings and bags are in the bus, which is in a ditch. We are trying to identify them using their phones,” said a police officer.

“The serious cases were sent to Nashik, while minor injuries were treated at nearby hospitals. More than 18 people have been admitted in Nashik,” said the officer, adding, “We are investigating what caused the accident.”

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis tweeted, “Palghar administration is also in touch with Nashik officials. My thoughts are with the families who lost their loved ones and wish speedy recovery to the injured persons.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed his grief through his Twitter account. “The bus accident in Maharashtra’s Palghar is unfortunate. My thoughts are with the bereaved families and prayers with those injured. The Maharashtra Government will provide all possible assistance to those affected,” he tweeted.
