Bollywood actor Payal Ghosh, who had recently accused director Anurag Kashyap of raping her, joined Union Minister Ramdas Athawale’s Republican Party of India (Athawale) on Monday. She joined the party along with some others in the presence of party president Athawale.
Ghosh was appointed vice-president of the women’s wing of the Republican Party of India. On the joining of the actor, Athawale said Payal Ghosh’s entry will strengthen the party. He assured Ghosh that Kashyap would be arrested soon. Ghosh said she joined the party to do something for the country and also thanked Athawale for his support in her fight against Kashyap. The director has continuously denied the allegations levelled by the actor.
Athawale told the actor that the RPI(A) is Babasaheb Ambedkar’s party which helps all sections of society, be it Dalits, Adivasis, OBCs, villagers, slum-dwellers and others. The party will get a good face if the actor joins the party, he said.
Last month, Payal Ghosh had filed a case against Kashyap in Versova police station alleging sexual assault and rape in 2013. The FIR was registered under the Indian Penal Code Sections 376 (I) (rape), 354 (outraging the modesty of a woman), 341 (wrongful restraint) and 342 (wrongful confinement). The director was then asked to present himself in Versova police station for questioning. Dismissing the actor’s allegations against him, Kashyap had said the allegations were baseless.
Following which the actor along with Ramdas Athawale had met Maharashtra Governor BS Koshyari seeking action against Kashyap. Moreover, Athawale and Ghosh had also met Mumbai Police Joint Commissioner Vishwas Nangare Patil and demanded security for the actor. Ghosh held a joint media press conference on September 28 with Athawale in which she had demanded Kashyap’s immediate arrest. Supporting the actor, Kangana Ranaut had also demanded Kashyap’s arrest.
