Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Saturday said he will not get the coronavirus vaccine as he does not trust the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Taking a dig at the saffron party, Yadav asked why the Central government was making massive arrangements for the vaccination drive and not using taalis and thalis to get rid of coronavirus. He said he does not trust BJP’s vaccine and will not get the shot. He said he will get the vaccine once his government comes to power in 2022. He added the vaccines will given for free under his rule.
Akhilesh’s statements came at a time when a nationwide dry run for the vaccine is being conducted across all states and union territories of India. In Uttar Pradesh’s capital Lucknow, the dry run was conducted at six places under supervision of medical practitioners. The exercise was aimed at figuring out the loopholes ahead of the vaccination drive in the country. India might soon be beginning the vaccination process as it inched closer to getting the vaccine with an expert panel recommending the emergency use authorisation of Oxford-AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine Covishield being manufactured by Serum Institute of India. The vaccine awaits final approval from DCGI which might take a couple of days more.
Yadav has been quite critical of the government over its handling of the pandemic in the country. Hitting out at the BJP government in Uttar Pradesh, the SP chief had earlier said that the government had proved to be a failure in dealing with Covid-19 as patients were neither getting medicines nor proper treatment. He said the state was conducting less tests to show less infections when the situation was getting out of control. Slamming Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi adityanath, Yadav had said the chief minister was busy cutting ribbons while the state was dealing with a pandemic.
