Indian-origin scientist Anil Menon among 10 astronauts chosen for NASA’s future moon mission

National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) on Tuesday announced the name of 10 selected trainee astronauts for its future moon mission.

Born to Ukrainian parents and Indian immigrants, Anil Menon was raised in Minneapolis, Minnesota, America. The Indian origin doctor had also helped in the launch of Elon Musk’s Space-X first humans to space during the ‘demo-2’ mission and had built a medical organisation to support the human system during future missions.

NASA on December 7 announced a list of 10 astronauts chosen from a field of more than 12,000 applicants to represent the US and work for humanity’s benefits in space.

Menon along with the 9 others that including a former member of the national cycle team, a firefighter-turned Harvard professor, and a pilot who led the first-ever women all women F-22 formation on combat, will report in January 2022, for duty at the Johnson Space Centre in Texas, where all of them will have to undergo for two years of training.

Menon have done his bachelors in Neurobiology from Harvard University back in 1999 and with master degree in Mechanical from Stanford University in 2004, he also completed his graduation in Doctor of Medicine from Engineering Stanford Medical School. Menon was in India for his study and support to Polio vaccination.

Dr Anil Menon is a physician with fellowship training in wilderness and aerospace medicine. As a physician, he was also the first responder during the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, the 2011 Reno Air Show accident, and the 2015 earthquake in Nepal. In 2014, he started as a NASA flight surgeon.

Anil Menon will become the fourth Indian-origin scientist to travel space after Sirisha Bandla, Kalpna Chawla, and Sunita Williams. Apart from them, Wing commander Rakesh Sharma is the only Indian to fly in space, who flew abroad in 1984.
