Veteran Bollywood and Marathi film-theatre actor Viju Khote passed away on Monday, September 30, due to multiple organ failure at the age of 77, PTI reported.

The actor, most famous for playing the dacoit Kalia in ‘Sholay’ and Robert in ‘Andaz Apna Apna’, died at his residence.

“He passed away today at 6.55 am peacefully in his sleep at the residence. He has been unwell since quite some time. He had multiple organ failure,” actor Bhavana Balsavar, his niece, told PTI.

“He did not wish to die in the hospital so we had brought him home few days ago. It is a great loss for all of us,” she said.

Many took to Twitter to express their condolences and immortalizing the actor with his character, Kalia in Sholay.

Film History Pics tweeted, “#RIP VIJU KHOTE passes away at 77.He portrayed supporting roles in 340+ films, most famous being ‘Kalia’ in film Sholay.”

Filmfare also tweeted, “From Kalia in #Sholay to Robert in #AndazApnaApna… #VijuKhote will always be remembered. We share our heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones after the passing away of the actor.”

Ashoke Pandit, President of Indian Film and Television Directors Association, also mourned Viju Khote in a tweet.

Ajay Devgan expressed his condolence in a tweet,

Rishi Kapoor, who worked with Viju Khote in Karz, remembered the late actor with these words: “We will miss you.”

Another fan wrote, “Kalia is immortal – RIP Mr.Viju Khote.”

The last rites of the actor will be performed at Chandan Wadi around 11 am, PTI reported.

Viju Khote is credited with having starred in over 300 films across Hindi and Marathi cinema. some of his popular films are  ‘Sholay’, ‘Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak’, ‘Ventilator’ and the TV show ‘Zabaan Sambhalke’.

He was last seen in 2018 film Jaane Kyun De Yaaron, ahead of which he also starred in a web-series titled Jeeney Bhi Do Yaaron.
