American teen sensation Coco Gauff fought her way into the third round of the Australian Open where she will meet defending champion Naomi Osaka of Japan.
Gauff showed maturity as she recovered a from set down to defeat Romanian Sorana Cirstea 4-6 6-3 7-5 with the Melbourne Arena crowd cheering each of her points.
Osaka also powered through to the third round after defeating China’s Saisai Zheng, 6-2, 6-4. The match was dominated by Osaka who hit 20 winners against Zheng’s seven.
Caroline Wozniacki, who will retire after the tournament, fought her way past Dayana Yastremska 7-5, 7-5. The match was marred by a controversial time-out which Yastremska took late in the second set.
Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic eased into the third round after their straight sets win in the second round.
Among the men, Grigor Dimitrov was upset by 22-year-old Tommy Paul in a five-set epic battle.
23-times Grand Slam winner Serena Williams, who is working on her fashion line to be unveiled in March, also booked a place in the third round after her win over Tamara Zidanšek.
In doubles, India’s Divij Sharan booked a second round place with partner Artem Sitak after defeating the pair of Pablo Carreno Busta and Joao Sousa.
