Fourteenth seed Sofia Kenin of USA beat Garbine Muruguza, who was unseeded, in the finals of Australian Open to win her first singles Grand Slam title.
The win gave Sofia Kenin a raise in her ranking as she reached number seven in the WTA rankings.
Kenin recovered from a first set loss, to win the next two sets with ease, taking the match 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.
Kenin, 21, who was born in Moscow, had not advanced past the fourth round at a Grand Slam in her 11 main draw appearances before this tournament.
She did not face a seeded player before meeting Ashleigh Barty in the semi-finals, who was not only the No. 1 seed, but also the face of the tournament, carrying expectations of Australia that has gone longer without a homegrown Grand Slam singles champion than any other Grand Slam host country.
