Babri Masjid demolition anniversary: Security tightened in Mathura amid threat to install Krishna idol in mosque, Ram Janmabhoomi chief priest says Mathura temple is not his concern

Mathura, 400 km west of Lucknow, has slipped into a security tightrope after a few right-wing groups threatened to install an idol of Lord Krishna in the adjacent Shahi Idgah mosque on December 6, the anniversary of Babri Masjid demolition.

Satyendra Das, the chief priest of the Ram Janmabhoomi in Ayodhya – where the under-construction Ram Temple is expected to be finished before the 2024 election – said he is not interested in the issue of Mathura temple which is part of the ruling BJP’s politics ahead of next year’s assembly elections.

The chief priest said his boundaries are till the Ram Lalla and currently is not looking at Mathura. Whether he goes to Kashi or Mathura, will decide after the construction of Ram Mandir. The Mathura temple is a matter of the BJPs politics not his, he told the NDTV.

Mathura, 400 km west of Lucknow, has slipped into a security tightrope after a few right-wing groups threatened to install an idol of Lord Krishna in the adjacent Shahi Idgah mosque on December 6, the anniversary of Babri Masjid demolition.

The Mathura police have put down three-tiered security ring around the Katra Keshav Dev area, where the temple rubs shoulders in a historic dispute with Shahi Idgah mosque.

The mosque is next to the Krishna Janmabhoomi and petitions in local courts claim it as part of the Janmabhoomi.

Section 144, which restricts the gathering of four or more people in any area, has been implemented in Mathura and Para-military forces have been deployed at different points from morning on December 5. The authorities have imposed traffic restrictions till December 7, with a complete suspension of any vehicle movement near the temple and the mosque area, SP traffic Harendra Kumar said.

Last month on the occasion of Diwali, the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had spoken about Kar Sewa at other places and pulled up the issue of Mathura temple in media headlines.

A month later (and just days before the Bari Masjid demolition anniversary), Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya tweeted what appeared to be a call for a temple in Mathura.
