Following Team India captain Virat Kohli’s remarks about lack of clarity over Indian opener Rohit Sharma’s injury, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) broke its silence and issued a official statement on Friday stating Sharma did not travel with the rest of the team to Australia after conclusion of Indian Premier League (IPL) as he wanted to attend to his ailing father. The board added that Sharma’s father is now better and the opener is currently undergoing rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA).
Sharma was not included in the team for the ODI leg of the Australian tour. However, he is part of the Test squad. However, it remains to be seen whether the fiery opener would be fit for the series as he has to undergo an injury assessment on December 11.
For the uninitiated, Kohli was asked about the status of Rohit Sharma’s injury during the press conference ahead of first ODI against Australia at Sydney. The Indian skipper said there was a lack of clarity over the matter. He said they got the information by mail that Sharma would not be available for first two weeks of the Australian tour due to a hamstring injury he picked up during the recently concluded IPL. However, Sharma was seen in action in the tournament after that. Kohli said they expected Sharma to travel with the rest of the squad, but no reason was given when he did not.
Earlier, there were reports of rift between the duo when Sharma and his wife Ritika Sajdeh unfollowed Viral Kohli’s wife Anushka Sharma on social media. India are currently playing the first ODI against the hosts at Sydney Cricket Stadium. Australia won the toss and decided to bat first.
