Amid furore over cases of rapes and sexual assault against women across the country, a 28-year-old Dalit woman was gang-raped by seven men in Bihar’s Buxar district on Saturday. The accused were said to have thrown her five-year-old son into a pond and the child drowned.
The police have registered an FIR, identified two of the accused and even arrested one in connection to the case, said officials.
The victim was admitted to a district hospital, about 135 km from Patna for treatment and her medical examination was underway. The child’s body has been sent for post-mortem, said police officer KK Singh. Other details were being ascertained, he added.
Reports said the woman had gone to a bank with her child on Saturday and did not return. The victim’s father then lodged an FIR when he located the mother-son duo near a pond at around 3 am on Sunday. The boy’s body was found in the pond.
The incident comes to light amid the ongoing protests across the country over the gang-rape and murder of a 19-year-old Dalit woman in Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras district. The woman was raped by four upper caste men from her village before she succumbed to her injuries at Delhi’s Safdarjung hospital last month. The families of the accused have now cried foul and alleged it was a case of honour killing. The victim was beaten by her mother and brother, said the accused. The UP Police further accused the victim’s family of lying and claimed that there was no rape as no sperm was found in her forensic report.
The CBI registered a case on Sunday, October 11, and the family has been asked to appear before the Lucknow bench of Allahabad High Court on Monday.
Meanwhile, India recorded a rise of over seven percent in cases of crime against women during the year.
