Gen Bipin Rawat chopper crash: IAF probe blames weather for the tragic incident

A panel was investigating the helicopter crash in which Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat and 13 others were killed. They clarified that it was caused by bad weather on Friday. Also, there was a Tri-Services Court of Inquiry into this Mi-17 V5 accident.

In its primary findings, it has been found that the accident was caused due to mechanical failure, sabotage, or negligence. They also clarified that the accident was a result of entry into clouds due to an unexpected change in weather conditions in the valley.

The tri-service investigation was headed by the Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari and Air Marshal Manvendra Singh. They had apprised Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on the findings of the probe.

What all have been identified earlier?

Earlier, people familiar with the chopper crash said that no technical snag or sabotage and bad weather leading to a phenomenon called Controlled Flight Into Terrain (CFIT) is believed to have been identified as the prime reason for the crash of the IAF helicopter near Coonoor that killed CDS Gen Bipin Rawat and 13 others.

When did the incident happen?

Defence Minister Rajnath Rajnath Singh informed Parliament that the helicopter had taken off from the Sulur Air Base at 11.48 am on December 9, 2021. It was expected to land at Wellington by 12.15 pm. But, the Ait Traffic Control at Sulur Air Base had lost its contact with the helicopter. It was about 12:08 pm when they lost the connection. Then, the local residents had spotted a fire in the forest near Coonoor. They rushed to the spot where they observed the helicopter was engulfed in flames. At that time, General Bipin Rawat was going to deliver a lecture at the Defence Services Staff College in Wellington. Also, with him, there were 12 officers who were martyred in the incident. General Bipin Rawat’s wife was also one of them.
