West Bengal BJP Yuva Morcha general secretary Pamela Goswami, her friend and security guard were arrested in south Kolkata on Friday, for allegedly carrying 90 grams of cocaine worth Rs 10 lakh in her car.
The incident took place in the New Alipore area, when in quick search police found Goswami in possession of contraband in her purse and under the seat of the car she was in. Besides her, the other two have been identified as Prabir Kumar Dey, her colleague and Somnath Chatterjee, her security guard.
All three of them would be produced before a court on Saturday, said the New Alipore police. They have been booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985.
Goswani is suspected to be involved in supply and consumption of drugs. The police are investigating if she is part of a racket and where the seized drug was being taken.
Reacting to the incident, State BJP spokesperson Shamik Bhattacharya has said that the law would take its own course. However, it is also a matter of concern whether the drug was planted in their bag. After all, the model code of conduct has not been imposed yet and the state police is under the control of the state government, he added.
However, Trinamool Congress leader Chandrima Bhattacharya attacked the BJP, saying the real picture of BJP in Bengal is emerging. Earlier, some BJP leaders were named in a child trafficking case, she said.
With the state Assembly elections due in April-May, Goswami has been actively participating in BJP Yuva Morcha’s political programmes. She joined the party in 2019, later appointed as Yuva Morcha General Secretary and Yuva Morcha observer for Hooghly district.
Before joining politics, Goswami has worked as an air hostess, a model and TV serial actor.
