KL Rahul put on 86 runs for the second wicket with Shreyas Iyer after India lost Rohit Sharma and skipper Virat Kohli early in the chase.
Rahul remained unbeaten on 57 runs off 50 balls on a slow track and finished off the match with all-rounder Shivam Dube(8).
Earlier, Indian bowlers brought out a spirited performance and restricted the Kiwis to 132/5 in 20 overs.
Indian bowlers, led by Ravindra Jadeja, made life difficult for the hosts after New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson won the toss and elected to bat.
While Jadeja picked up two wickets for 18, Jasprit Bumrah (1/21), Shardul Thakur (1/21) and Shivam Dube (1/16) claimed one each at the Eden park.
India were comprehensive in their victory as they won the tie with 15 balls to spare.
India will take on New Zealand in the third T20I on January 29 at Seddon Park, Hamilton.
