Citizenship Amendment Bill: Tear gas shells fired, 50 students detained in Jamia

The protest called by Jamia students against Citizenship Amendment Bill took a violent turn today after students tried to jump over the police barricades. The march, which started peacefully was eventually blocked by the police to prevent them from marching to Parliament Street.

Thousands of students assembled near the Jamia University gate number 1 from where they were supposed to begin their march.

Police personnel tried to push the students back inside the university. When agitating students didn’t stop, the police fired several rounds of tear-gas and lathi-charged the students. The students also resorted to stone-pelting. Later, police detained over 50 students and took them to the Badarpur Police station.

Delhi Metro Rail Corporation on the advisory of Delhi Police closed all the entries and exit of Patel Chowk and Janpath Metro station. The trains were also not halting at these two stations.

The students accused the police of using force against them. The Students’ Federation of India in its statement said, “The Central Government has shown once again that any opinion or voice which does not toe their line of authoritarian Hindutva politics, will be met with brute force.
