Congress rebels should leave, says Adhir Chowdhury in Sibal slapdown

Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury on Wednesday slammed senior leader Kapil Sibal, saying those who are criticising the Congress can join some other party or start a new one instead of embarrassing activities.

The Congress leader in the Lok Sabha said that such leaders should not indulge in such embarrassing sweeping statements. He was referring to Kapil Sibal’s Congress in decline comment. In an interview to The Indian Express on Monday, Sibal said the Congress was in decline, that the time for introspection was over and the party must be brave and willing to recognise them. He said he was forced to raise concerns in the public as there was no forum in the party to express his views.

Chowdhury told NDTV that such leaders enjoy close proximity to party president Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, and were free to raise issues with them. He said some leaders think Congress is not the right party for them then they may join any other party matching their interests or rather set up their own party. But they should not indulge in such embarrassing activities since it can erode the credibility of the Congress.

Meanwhile, amid the tumult over Kapil Sibal’s statements, senior leader P Chidambaram said the Bihar election and bypoll results show that the Congress has no organisational presence on the ground and has weakened considerably. He said the bypoll results in other states were more startling than the Bihar results since the party was ground into the soil in states where it had better organisational strength than Bihar . He said elections in Bihar proved that even smaller parties like CPI-ML Liberation and AIMIM can perform well if they are strong on the ground. To beat the BJP-led coalition, the Congress party has to strengthen the organisation at the ground level, he said.

While Chidambaram has not commented on the leadership like Sibal, the comments from two top leaders seem to have brought the unresolved crisis back into the spotlight.
