After Mumbai, Delhi to go into weekend lockdown amid massive Covid surge

The passes will be issued to those working in the essential services sector to enable unhindered operations during the new curbs.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday announced a weekend curfew in the national capital to tackle a record rise in Covid-19 cases over the past few weeks.

The announcement was made after a high-level meeting of Kehriwal with Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal on the Covid-19 situation in the city. With 17,282 new cases, Delhi recorded the biggest single-day jump in its coronavirus tally on Wednesday. 

The consisted increase of more than 10,000 cases in a single day for over the past few weeks in the national capital had mounted pressure on the Delhi government who had so far maintained the no lockdown will be imposed in the city.

As per the new announcement,  the weekend lockdown will remain in place till the daily count of coronavirus cases stabilise in the city. With an exception to essential services, all major markets, shopping malls, and other commercial centres will remain closed 

The restrictions are for your sake. It will be inconvenient but these restrictions are necessary to break the chain of transmission, said the chief minister in a video address.

The passes will be issued to those working in the essential services sector to enable unhindered operations during the new curbs. Shopping malls, gyms, spas, and auditoriums will remain closed and cinema halls will only operate at 30 percent capacity.

Weddings that have been scheduled will be allowed with curfew passes. Only weekend market per zone will be functional. No dine-in shall be permitted, though restaurants can provide home delivery services. People can travel to and from the airport and railway stations will be given curfew passes, as per new announcements.

Amid a Covid-19 surge, the Delhi government had earlier attached banquet halls, schools and sports complexes to hospitals in a move to ramp up beds for treatment. Private hospitals have already been told to set aside a chunk of beds for Covid patients.

Last week, the Maharashtra government had imposed the weekend lockdown in view of the increasing coronavirus cases in the state. Currently, the state is witnessing a 15-day lockdown with new restrictions as stated by the government.
