World number 1 Novak Djokovic defeated German Alexander Zverev in a high voltage semi-final 4-6, 6-2, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 to book his final berth against second seed Daniil Medvedev on Sunday. If he wins the final, Djokovic would become the first man to win all four major titles in the same year since Rod Laver in 1969.
Djokovic is just a win away from his fourth career US Open title and 21st overall grand slam title, which would make him the player with the most number of grand slam titles in men’s singles Tennis, surpassing Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.
At the moment, Federer, Nadal and Djokovic are tied with 20 titles each. He also equalled Federer by getting to a 31st career slam final.
If he wins Sunday’s final, Djokovic would become the first man to win all four major titles in the same year since Rod Laver in 1969.
Australian legend Laver was in the stands to watch Djokovic beat Zverev to avenge his Tokyo Olympics semi-final loss. Djokovic is also the oldest US Open finalist since Andre Agassi at 35 in 2005 and has a chance to be the oldest US Open champion since Ken Rosewall at 35 in 1970.
While Medvedev, the 2019 US Open runner-up, defeated Canadian 12th seed Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-4, 7-5, 6-2 to reach his third career slam final. World no. 2 Medvedev has said that he is going to throw everything he has and will not let Djokovic win the slam.
The US Open final can be seen as a rematch of February’s Australian open final, where Djokovic knocked out Medvedev in straight sets. Medvedev trails Djokovic 5-3 in their all-time rivalry.
Now, all eyes are on US Open final on Sunday where world no. 1 Djokovic and second seed Medvedev will face each other. Ahead of the final, Djokovic said he will treat the next match like it is the last match of his career.
