The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation(DMRC) on Sunday had to close down its operations at Jaffrabad metro station as more than 500 protesters blocked the road outside the metro station, demanding the Centre to repeal the Citizenship (Amendment) Act.

In a tweet, the DMRC also said no trains will halt at this station.

Delhi Police has deployed heavy security in the area, as the protest errupted in Saturday night.

The protesters, mainly women, carrying the national tricolour and raising slogans of ‘aazadi’, said they would not move from the site till the Centre revoke Citizenship (Amendment) Act, PTI reports. They also tied a blue band on their arm and also raised ‘Jai Bhim’ slogans.

The protesters have blocked road No. 66, connecting Seelampur to Maujpur and Yamuna Vihar.

For over a month now, women-led anti-CAA protests have swept the country since the contentious law got approval of both the Houses of the parliament. The President’s assent was followed by agitations across the country. Student organisations, opposition parties and civil society came out in huge numbers.

In Delhi, several cities in UP and Karnataka, the peaceful protests turned violent. Over 18 people have been killed in UP and four in Assam.

The law has been described as “unconstitutional” by opposition parties and Human Rights activists who claim that it excludes Muslims from being a part of the law that provides citizenship to refugees from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan.
