Five effective home treatments for shortness of breath

Shortness of breath or Dyspnea can be a very uncomfortable and distressing experience for any of us. You would have faced it many times like after climbing 5-6 sets of stairs, or due to the formation of mucus in your lungs when you suffer from a cold. It may occur due to different reasons—sometimes due to serious health conditions, and, most times, it can be temporary. 

Trying any of these simple home treatments, you can deal with your shortening of breath:

#Black coffee

Caffeine rich coffee is effective enough to reduce the stress in muscles, and improve lung functions. It is also a proven remedy for asthma patients. If you want to overcome breathlessness, you can take a cup of black coffee for instant relief. 


The common herb ginger has many anti-inflammatory properties. Having ginger tea is also a good option to calm down and feel refreshed quickly whenever you feel shortness of breath. It can be a very effective remedy to reduce the shortness of breath due to respiratory infection. 

#Breathing with pursed lips

Breathing with pursed lips slows your pace of breathing and provides you comfort in a short time. It is a very simple and emphatic way to control the problem of breathlessness.  

See how you can do it:

  • Sit calm on the floor or a chair with your back straight
  • Inhale with your nose for 5 to 6 seconds. Fill your stomach with air.
  • Exhale for 6 to 7 seconds with pursed lips
  • You can repeat it 10 to 20 times to return back to a normal state.

#Inhale steam

If you suffer from a cold, it can be difficult for you to breathe due to the coagulation of mucus in the lungs. To get relief, you should inhale steam to dissolve the mucus and open up your air passage. 

# Sit close to a fan
