Former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has died due to multiple organ failure, state Health Minister Himanta Biswa informed on Monday. The former CM was battling for his life with post-Covid complications at Gauhati Medical College Hospital for weeks. He was extremely critical. Superintendent Abhijit Sarma had said that his condition deteriorated on Monday morning.
Gogoi had tested positive on August 25. He was discharged two months later on October 25 after testing negative. However, his health worsened again following which he was again admitted to the hospital on November 2.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted a condolence message. He wrote, Shri Tarun Gogoi Ji was a popular leader and a veteran administrator, who had years of political experience in Assam as well as the Centre. He said he is anguished by his passing away. My thoughts are with his family and supporters in this hour of sadness. Om Shanti.
According to reports, the octogenarian had suffered multi-organ failure and was on ventilation. He was put on dialysis on Sunday for six hours. There had been fluctuations in his blood pressure as well. Gogoi was able to breathe only through machines, the reports said.
Meanwhile, Assam health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who is currently at GMCH, had asked people to pray for the 86-year-old leader. He said doctors cannot do much at this stage and urged people to pray for Gogoi. Sarma had said all the organs of Gogoi had failed except for some signals from the brain and little eye movement.
Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal tweeted that Tarun Gogoi was a people’s leader who had a great contribution to Assam’s political and public sphere. Even though being in opposition parties, they shared a wonderful rapport and Gogoi was a guiding figure. He has sent his condolences to the family and well-wishers of Gogoi.
