Ganesh Chaturthi 2021: These Lord Ganesha movies are a must-watch for your kids

The Ganesh Utsav begins today. The auspicious Hindu festival is celebrated for 10-11 days every year. Also known as Vinayak Chavithi, the festival is celebrated with great zeal across India.

According to the Hindu calendar, the festival is usually celebrated in the month of Bhadra. This year, Ganesh Chaturti falls on September 10 and all holidays end on September 21.

The elephant-headed god is worshipped for wealth, knowledge, wisdom and prosperity. During this time, devotees pray for wisdom and seek his blessings before undertaking any important work. Lord Ganesha has about 108 different names. He is also known as Gajanana, Vinayaka, Vighnaharta, among others.

This festival is widely celebrated in various Indian states like Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka and Telangana celebrate it with devotion.

Ganesh Chaturthi Celebrations:

The festival starts with setting up Ganesha idols in houses or beautifully decorated outdoor tents. Worship begins with Pranaprahis, a ritual to conjure life in idols, followed by Shodashopachara, or 16 ways of paying taxes. 

Among the chanting of Vedic hymns from religious texts such as the Ganesha Upanishad, idols are donned with red sandalwood paste and yellow and red flowers. Ganesha also offers coconuts, jaggery and 21 modak (sweet dumplings) which are considered to be Ganesha’s favourite foods.

At the end of the festival, the idols are immersed in the local rivers with dhol and tashe.
