The Delhi Police has detained a 38-year-old man in connection with the death of an Aam Aadmi Party worker, who succumbed to death due to bullet injuries, after Mehrauli MLA Naresh Yadav’s victory procession was shot at late on Tuesday in Delhi’s Kishangarh area by unidentified people. Another worker was injured in the attack.
The deceased was identified by the party as Ashok Mann. The injured volunteer is identified as Harinder and has been admitted to the hospital.
While Yadav was not available for an official comment, party sources said he was perturbed by the incident. Yadav is safe, the sources added.
According to the initial probe, three people were involved in the attack. The detained person had a personal enmity with the deceased and the firing had nothing do with politics, the police claimed. Search was underway for the other two accused.
“The accused and the deceased had an old personal dispute. The accused’s nephew had received bullet injuries in 2019 after he was shot at. The accused suspected the deceased to be behind the 2019 incident. He had also threatened the deceased 15 days back,” said Delhi Police.
According to the police, the attackers managed to escape from the spot.
“The investigation so far reveals that there was one assailant. Naresh Yadav wasn’t the target. The assailant had specifically come to target the man who was shot dead,” said Southwest Additional DCP Ingit Pratap Singh.
A PCR call was made by the AAP workers, who rushed the injured to the hospital.
“The incident is really unfortunate. I don’t know the reason behind the attack but it happened all of a sudden. Around 4 rounds were fired. The vehicle I was in was attacked. I am sure if police inquires properly they will be able to identify the assailant,” Naresh Yadav said.
Naresh Yadav defeated BJP’s Kusum Khatri by 9,000 votes to win from Mehrauli constituency in the Delhi assembly election. AAP claimed resounding victory by winning 62 seats in the seventy seat Assembly.
