Heavy rains disrupt normal life in Hyderabad, evacuation of low-lying areas underway

A fresh bout of rains in Hyderabad on Saturday evening resulted in water-logging and huge traffic jams devastating the life in the city. Due to the overnight heavy rains, Balanagar lake breached its levels causing flash floods in the nearby areas. In several viral videos, vehicles were seen being swept away due to the heavy downpour. Telangana is witnessing unprecedented rains this year. The downpour earlier this week caused heavy damage worth crores  in the state and left at least 50 persons dead.

Hyderabad Commissioner of Police Anjani Kumar has said that evacuation work is being done in low-lying areas of the city in wake of the situation. She said that many low lying colonies including  Hafiz baba nagar, Phoolbagh, Omar Colony, Indra Nagar, Shivaji Nagar and Rajiv Nagar had been flooded. She asked people to co-operate in the evacuation process. Disaster Response Force (DRF) of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has also come into action and is trying to clear water stagnation in the inundated areas. Vishwajit Kampati, Director of Vigilance and Disaster Management of GHMC tweeted that all the measures are being taken to clear the water-logging in the flooded areas.

Meanwhile, Municipal Administration Minister KT Rama Rao paid a visit to areas affected by the flood. He also presented Rs 5 lakh ex gratia cheques to the kin of those who lost their lives in the rain-related incidents. KTR said that the deaths caused by heavy rains were unfortunate. He assured the people that the Telangana government will take all measures to prevent such incidents in future.  The minister has directed the officials to carry out repair work at Appa pond in coordination with the irrigation department. The overflowing of the pond has resulted in inundation of the Gaganpahad area. He directed the local revenue officials to clear any encroachments in the pond.
