Team India on day 4 of the 2nd Test match defeated New Zealand by 372 runs in the Mumbai Test. This is also the biggest victory by the Indian team in terms of runs over any team in history.
Chasing the mountain of the target of 540 runs, Kiwis were dismissed at just 167 runs on day 4 of its first session. Only Daryl Mitchell (60), who came in place of injured Kane Williamson, and Henry Nicholls (44) managed to get some runs against Indian bowlers, else didn’t even score in double-digit except Will Young (20) and Rachin Ravindra (18).
Veteran spinner Ravi Ashwin and newbie Jayant Yadav took 4 wickets each in the second innings, while Axar Patel also managed to pick 1 wicket.
Mayank Agarwal was named man of the match for his remarkable century (150) in the first innings and half-century (62) in the second innings of the match, while legendary spinner R Ashwin was named man of the series for his dominant bowling in both matches, taking 14 wickets in two matches.
Ashwin also became the first bowler to claim 50 wickets in 2021, this is the fourth instance, he has taken more than 50-wickets in a year.
India 1st innings
After winning the toss, Virat Kohli opted to bat first in the Mumbai test. With Mayank Agrawal’s fourth hundred (150) and Axar Patel’s maiden fifty, team India put 325 in the first innings. New Zealand’s Ajaz Patel became the only third bowler to pick 10 wickets in innings, equalling the record of Anil Kumble and Jim Laker.
New Zealand 1st innings
In response to India’s 325, Kiwis got bowled out on just 62 runs, courtesy to Mohammaed Siraj’s fierce bowling with the new ball and then R Aswin’s magic with the ball. Ashwin scalped 4 wickets on his name, while Siraj and Axar Patel picked 3 and 2 wickets, respectively.
India 2nd innings
Team India came to at in second innings with a massive lead of 263 runs in second innings. Virat Kohli-led Indian team declared the innings at 276-7 and gave a huge target of 540 runs to New Zealand. Indian born Kiwi spinner Ajaz Patel once again was the star with the ball and took 4 wickets, taking 14 wickets in the match.
New Zealand 2nd innings
Chasing 540 runs, New Zealand were restricted to 167 and India registered a massive 372 run victory over New Zealand to win the match and series. Jayant Yadav who was playing in place of injured Ravindra Jadeja, took 4 wickets. Ace spinner Ashwin and Axar Patel also took 4 & 1 wicket, respectively.
