Victim in coma after major head injuries
In continuing crimes against women in the capital, a 20-year-old girl was allegedly raped and then thrown off from the fourth floor by a person known to her. The accused has been arrested by the police.
The incident was reported from Rohini’s Begumpur area on the intervening night of August 10 and 11. The victim has sustained major head injuries and is said to be in a coma at a hospital.
“Rama Vihar resident Deepak had been arrested and a case under IPC Sections 307, 366, 511 and 376 lodged at the Begumpur police station,”said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Rohini) Rishi Pal.
According to a report, the woman had gone out with her friend, her boyfriend and the 22-year-old accused to Cannaught Place. While returning, the accused offered to drop the victim home and said he would switch his motorcycle for a car from his house.
Meanwhile, victim’s two remaining friends boarded an auto rickshaw from Rama Vihar and left for their respective homes.
“Deepak took the girl on his bike and told her that after getting his car from his house he would drop her at her house. The accused, who was drunk, took the girl to an under construction building where he attempted to rape her. As she resisted, the accused tossed her from the 4th floor of the building,” said a senior police officer, privy to the investigation.
Police said they received information from the hospital around 2 am and found slippers and clothes of the victim lying on the stairs of the building.
The girl’s family has alleged that there were more people involved in the incident. But so far, the police have caught only one accused.
According to a latest government data, Delhi registered 2,199 rape cases in 2015 — an average of six a day. Growing incidents of kidnapping and sexual assaults on girls and women in the country are major roadblocks to empowerment and freedom for women, said an Economic Survey tabled in the Parliament on Friday.
