Former Karnataka Lokayukta and Supreme Court Judge (Retd) N Venkatachala passed away in Bengaluru on Wednesday morning. Justice Venkatachala was 89 years old. He is survived by sons who are senior advocates. He was appointed as the Lokayukta of Karnataka in 2001 and his attitude against corruption spread panic among the corrupt people.
Venkatachala conducted hundreds of raids against corrupt officials and was also very vocal against the misconduct prevalent in the administration. Several dignitaries including Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa, former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and HD Kumaraswamy have mourned his death.
Mourning his death, Kumaraswamy wrote, “Saddened by the demise of Former Karnataka Lokayukta & Rtd. Supreme Court Judge Shri. Venkatachala. His contribution to fight against corruption shall always be remembered. My deepest condolences to his family & friends.”
Justice Venkatachala was born on 3 July 1930. He did his schooling in Moolbagh, his high school in Kolar and his college education in Bangalore. He received his BSc and BL degrees from the University of Mysore. Justice Venkatachala entered the then High Court of Mysore (now Karnataka) on 16 November 1955. He practiced in civil, criminal and constitutional matters.
