NCERT panel recommends inclusion of Ramayana, Mahabharata in school textbooks

The committee’s chairperson CI Issac said that the panel also recommended writing the Preamble of the Constitution on classroom walls.

A high-level committee formed by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) to revise the school curriculum for social sciences, has recommended to include epics like Ramayana and Mahabharata in school textbooks. The committee’s chairperson CI Issac said that the panel also recommended writing the Preamble of the Constitution on classroom walls.

The seven-member committee’s recommendation will now be taken into consideration by the 19-member National Syllabus and Teaching Learning Material Committee (NSTC) notified in July to finalise the curriculum, textbooks and learning material for these classes.

The National Syllabus and Teaching Learning Material Committee (NSTC) has also recently formed a Curricular Area Group (CAG) for Social Science to develop Syllabi and Teaching-Learning material for the subject.

Mentioning that it is significant to teach Ramayana and Mahabharata to students in classes 7 to 12, Issac said that the committee has insisted on teaching epics like Ramayana and Mahabharata in the social science because they think that students in their teenage years build their self-esteem, patriotism and pride for their nation. He added that every year thousands of students leave the country and seek citizenship in other countries because of the lack of patriotism among them. Therefore, it is important for them to understand their roots and develop love for their country and their culture, he continued.

Elaborating on the idea behind recommending writing the Preamble of the Constitution on the walls of the classrooms, Issac said that the Preamble is noble and it gives importance to social values including democracy and secularism. Hence, they have recommended writing it on the walls of the classrooms so that everyone can understand and learn from it.

Earlier, committee chairperson Issac said that the panel had also recommended replacing the name ‘India’ with ‘Bharat’ in textbooks, introducing ‘classical History’ instead of ancient History in the curriculum of textbooks for classes 3 to 12.

Shivraj Patil

Senior Congress leader and former Lok Sabha Speaker Shivraj Patil passed away on Friday morning at his residence in Latur, Maharashtra. He was 90. Family sources said Patil died at his home, ‘Devghar’, following a brief illness.

Patil is survived by his son Shailesh Patil, daughter-in-law Archana, who is associated with the BJP, and two granddaughters. His demise marks the end of a long political career that spanned several decades and key constitutional positions.

Long public life spanning legislature and governance

Born on October 12, 1935, Shivraj Patil began his political journey at the grassroots level as the municipal council chief of Latur. He entered the Maharashtra legislature as an MLA in the early 1970s before moving to national politics.

Patil went on to represent the Latur Lok Sabha constituency seven times. However, he faced defeat in the 2004 general elections when he lost the seat to BJP leader Rupatai Patil Nilangekar.

Between 1991 and 1996, Patil served as the 10th Speaker of the Lok Sabha, a role in which he earned wide respect for maintaining parliamentary decorum. He later held the crucial portfolio of Union Home Minister from 2004 to 2008.

Respected parliamentarian and constitutional expert

Apart from his legislative roles, Shivraj Patil also served as the Governor of Punjab and Administrator of the Union Territory of Chandigarh from 2010 to 2015. Party leaders recalled that he was known for his dignified conduct and restraint, rarely engaging in personal attacks either in public speeches or private interactions.

He was widely regarded as a scholar-politician, with a strong command over Marathi, English and Hindi. His deep understanding of constitutional matters and his articulate presentations in Parliament made him a respected figure across party lines.
