Ravindra Gosain, a member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and district-level officer bearer of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), was shot dead by two bike-borne assailants near his house in Ludhiana at around 7.30 am on Tuesday morning.
According to eye witnesses, Gosain was shot twice from a close range and he suffered bullet injuries in his head and shoulder. The assailants fled the scene after committing the crime. The RSS leader was rushed to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
The incident happened in the Kailash Nagar area when Gosain was returning after attending a RSS shakha.
The 58-year-old Gosain was head of the Raghunath Nagar Mohan Shakha of RSS in Ludhiana. His murder marks the fifth such incident in the past three years wherein a right-wing leader in Punjab has been attacked. In August 2016, senior Punjab RSS leader Brigadier Jagdish Gagneja (retd.) was shot by unidentified bike-borne youths in a busy area of Jalandhar city. The assailants continue to be at large. In February the same year, RSS leader Naresh Kumar was shot at in a similar way in Shahidi park of Kidwai Nagar. However, he escaped unhurt.
