The BCCI on Wednesday included Chennai Super Kings all-rounder Shardul Thakur replacing Delhi Capitals off-spin all-rounder Axar Patel in team India’s squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup which is scheduled to be held in the UAE and Oman from October 17.
Thakur, who was earlier on the list of stand-by players along with Shreyas Iyer and Deepak Chahar, has been impressed the selectors with his 18 wickets in the ongoing IPL for Chennai Super Kings.
After a discussion with the team management, the selection committee has added Shardul Thakur to the main squad. All-rounder Axar Patel, who was part of the 15-members squad, will now be on the list of stand-by players, BCCI secretary Jay Shah said.
Shardul’s inclusion in place of Axar is the only change in team India’s 15-member T20 Worl Cup squad following confusions over Mumbai Indians all-rounder Hardik Pandya’s availability as a bowler in the upcoming T20 World Cup.
Pandya, who has not bowled regularly since his successful back surgery in 2019, did not bowl for Mumbai Indians in the IPL 2021.
In its press release, the BCCI also instructed 8 players to stay in the UAE to assist the team India in its preparations. These players are Avesh Khan, Umran Malik, Harshal Patel, Lukman Meriwala, Venkatesh Iyer, Karn Sharma, Shahbaz Ahmed and K Gowtham.
However, Royal Challengers leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal could not find a place despite dismissing 18 wickets in 15 matches.
India will open their campaign on October 24 against Pakistan under the mentorship of former India captain MS Dhoni.
India will next face New Zealand at the same venue on October 31. Later, the team will then travel to Abu Dhabi to face Afghanistan on November 3.
