5 Bollywood Movies that will you inspire you on International Women’s Day

Bollywood has produced several women-centric movies, giving out messages on gender-related issues that are usually swept under the carpet.

Each year on March 8, International Women’s day is observed across the globe to celebrate the historic journey of women’s achievement. Despite various challenges, women have come a long way fighting for their rights and against gender inequality. 

Even Bollywood has played a crucial role in showing the reality of women for decades on the silver screen. It has produced several women-centric movies, giving out messages on gender-related issues that are usually swept under the carpet.  

As International Women’s Day is around the corner, we have brought you the list of Bollywood films to watch to celebrate this special day dedicated to women. 

1.English Vinglish

The film headlined by late actor Sridevi is centered on a woman named Shashi who is looked down upon by her daughter and husband because of her inability to speak English. Written and directed by female director Gauri Shinde, the film captures the journey of the protagonist from learning English on her trip to the US to proving to everyone that a woman can do anything. English Vinglish will definitely encourage you to believe in yourself.

2. Thappad

Helmed by Anubhav Sinha, Thappad is another powerful women-centric film which stars Taapsee Pannu and Pavail Gulati in lead. The intense drama narrated the ordeal of a woman who was slapped by husband at an office party, causing her to file for divorce. Though it seems to be a small issue to society, the woman decides to fight for self respect. The film perfectly showcases women’s courage, strength and power.

3. Queen

The comedy drama stars Kangana Ranaut in the lead role, Rajkummar Rao and Lisa Haydon in supporting roles. The film proves that a woman can do anything without a man. The story revolves around a girl named Rani whose fiance leaves her just before the wedding. Undeterred, she decides to go on their honeymoon alone and rediscovers herself. Directed by Vikas Bahl, the film was a blockbuster at the box office.It’s a must watch film on this International Women’s Day.

4. Pink 

Starring Amitabh Bachchan, Taapsee Pannu in pivotal roles, the film narrates a riveting story of a woman who after being molested along with other friends tries to file an FIR against the molester who is the politician’s nephew. Playing the role of a retired lawyer, Amitabh helps her and other girls to fight the case. The film sends out a strong message that when a woman says ‘No’ then, it means ‘No’, no matter what she is wearing or how she is leading her life.

5. Lipstick Under My Burkha

If you are looking for powerful performances with an equally appealing plot, do not miss Alankrita Srivastava’s directorial Lipstick Under My Burkha. Starring Konkana Sen Sharma, Ratna Pathak, Ahana Kumra, and Plabita Borthakur, the film revolves around women’s sexuality and desires. The film will take you on a journey on how women break the shackle of society to accomplish their desires.
