Five Kashmiri political leaders – Salman Sagar, Showkat Ganai, Altaf Kalloo of National Conference and Nizamuddin Bhat and Muktiar Baba of People’s Democratic Party were released from political detention after four months on Thursday.

This decision comes a day after broadband services in government offices were restored in the state.
On August 5 last year, the union government had revoked Article 370 which granted special status to state of Jammu and Kashmir. Since the abrogation, several political leaders, including former chief ministers Mehbooba Mufti, Omar Abdullah and Farooq Abdullah have been detained.
Last week a 15-member delegation had visited Jammu and Kashmir to take stock of the ground situation. According to the Union government, the main objective of the visit was to let the envoys see the first hand efforts of the government to normalise situation.
A massive outreach program has been planned by the Union government to interact with locals and create awareness about the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). BJP leaders will be visiting the valley from January 18 – 25, 2020.
