JNUSU and civil society march to make ‘education affordable’

Students from across Universities and institutions in Delhi took to the streets today and marched behind the banner of Jawaharlal Nehru University Student Union’s against the hostel and mess fee hike in Jawaharlal University.

Along with students, JNU alumna, JNU Teachers’ Association, members of civil society walked shoulder to shoulder with the JNU students against ‘commercialization of education’.

JNU students assembled at Ganga dhaba in JNU, where they have arranged for buses to reach Mandi House, from where they started marching towards Parliament. Apart from left student organizations, including SFI, AISF, KYS, NSUI among others, common students from Jamia, Ambedkar University also marched while raising slogans ‘to save public education’.

Yogendra Yadav, Umair Khalid and Bhim Army members also turned up and showed their support in a bid to support the students’ cause.

Meanwhile, Delhi Police chief Amulya Patnaik had directed his personnel to desist from using against any kind of force against protesting students of Jawaharlal Nehru University and allow the students to march from Mandi House to a certain point on Parliament street.

The high-power committee constituted by the Human Resource Development met the students, JNUTA representatives, and all the other stakeholders of the university. The meeting went on for two hours in the admin block of the campus to find solutions to the fee hike issue.

JNUSU representatives reiterated their demands for a complete rollback and submitted a charter of demands to the panel. The meeting was termed as positive by the members of the committee.

The members of the committee had assured the students that they will keep the students’ concerns and demands in their minds while coming up with the recommendations but it will be the JNU administration which has to take a final call.
