Kafeel Khan, the doctor who was jailed after the death of over 60 children at Gorakhpur government hospital in 2017, was arrested in Mumbai on Wednesday by Uttar Pradesh Police.
He is accused of making inflammatory statements while speaking against Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) during a talk at Aligarh Muslim University last month.
He was arrested after First Information Report (FIR) was registered against him under section 153-A (Promoting enmity between different groups on ground of religion) of IPC on December 13.
The FIR says Khan made an attempt to vitiate the peaceful atmosphere at the university and disturb communal harmony.
Kafeel Khan was in Mumbai to take part in the protests against CAA, as women protesters have started an indefinite stir against the CAA at Mumbai Bagh, similar to that at Shaheen Bagh in Delhi.
However, it’s not clear why the Special Task Force of UP Police arrested Kafeel Khan now, over 40 days after the FIR was registered.
Dr Khan was the nodal officer of BRD Medical College’s Department of Pediatrics. While in the immediate aftermath of the tragedy, Khan had been praised for his quick responsiveness in dealing with the situation, as attacks on the Yogi Adityanath government grew over the deaths.
But he was later arrested before an Uttar Pradesh government inquiry gave him clean chit last year.
