The PDP MLA’s statement came a day after he asked legislators in the J&K assembly to not express happiness over the killings of Kashmiri militants.
The ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) of Jammu and Kashmir got into a fresh controversy on Thursday after its lawmaker, Aijaz Ahmad Mir described terrorists as “our brothers and martyrs”. The PDP MLA further stated that the country must not celebrate the killings of the militants, even while the people should condemn the deaths of the Indian Army soldiers.
“The militants belong to Jammu and Kashmir, they are our children. We should not celebrate their killing, it is our collective failure. We feel sad when our security forces are martyred as well, we should sympathize with parents of security jawans and with parents of militants as well,” said Mir outside the state Assembly.
On further questions from the reporters asking him whether he actually feels the militants are martyrs, Mir said, “Jo Kashmir ke hein, chahey kisi bhi halat mein marein, woh martyr hein (Those who hail from Kashmir are martyrs irrespective of the fact under what circumstances they get killed).”
The PDP MLA’s latest statement came a day after he asked the legislators in the Jammu and Kashmir assembly to not express happiness over the killings of Kashmiri militants. Stating the militants as brothers, ruling party leader demanded the state government to hold peace talks with all parties concerned, including the separatists – in order to resolve the ongoing unrest in the valley.
Despite his apparent sympathy for the Kashmiri militants, Mir – who represents the Shopian district, a hotbed for terrorist activities – himself had been a target of a militant activity recently. Three months back, militants had thrown a grenade at the house of the PDP lawmaker in Shopian’s Zainpora area, however injuring none.
Reacting to Mir’s statement, BJP Member of Parliament (MP) Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said, “Terrorists and separatists are the enemies of Kashmir, Kashmiris, development and peace. How can they be someone’s brother?”
BJP leader and lawmaker Ravinder Raina said, “It is ridiculous, I condemn this statement. It is glorifying terrorism, you are playing with fire…Go and ask families of those who lost people to terror in the past 30 years. This is rubbing salt into the wounds of relatives of those killed in Pakistan-sponsored terror.”
Further stating that PDP is a party of contradictions, senior leader of the opposition national conference Akbar Lone said, “There is a contradiction in the PDP, on one side they kill militants and on the other hand such a statement coming from the PDP MLA, this contradicts CM Mehbooba Mufti’s assembly statement.”
