Seventeen people, including two children, have died after a compound wall collapsed and damaged three houses due to heavy rain in a village in Tamil Nadu’s Coimbatore. The State government has announced a relief of RS 4 Lakh for the families of the deceased.
Incessant rainfall lashed several parts of Tamil Nadu on Sunday with the arrival of North-East monsoon. Some places have received a record rainfall of 80mm to 100mm. The MET department issued an ”extreme heavy rainfall’ alert in six districts of the state. The department has made adequate arrangement of equipment like inflatable rubber tubes, long rescue ropes and other tools for rescue and evacuation work.
The administration has announced that all the schools and colleges will remain shut. The Madras University and Anna University have postponed all the exams that were scheduled in the wake of heavy rainfall and flood-like situation in the state.
The Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Services said that it is fully prepared to deal with the emergency and issued landline numbers for the public.
